Frequently Asked Questions

What is Eye Black Academy?

Eye Black Academy is an online baseball instruction site for parents and coaches of Little Leaguers aged 4-12. Our mission is to provide easy to understand yet proven and powerful instruction designed specifically for the under 12 year-old baseball player. We know that most Little Leaguers don’t have access to world class coaching and that most parents would love to have the tools to help their kid improve – Eye Black Academy videos and supporting content were produced with that in mind.

Where did you come up with your name?

Eye black is used to protect a player’s eyes from the sun.  But to us, it defines a positive and hardworking attitude we want to see in all of our players.

What is new about Eye Black Academy?

Our fundamental belief is that youth athletes learn baseball differently than a high school, college, or professional athlete.  You might realize this, but you have as much experience coaching 4-12 year old’s as Miguel Cabrera, Albert Pujols, and Derek Jeter, combined!  Just because someone can hit a ball 500 feet does not mean they can coach or manage a six year old.  With an Eye Black Academy subscription, you can coach your Little Leaguer better than any Major Leaguer can.

Our fundamental belief is that youth athletes learn baseball differently than a high school, college, or professional athlete. Just because a technique works for Major Leaguer, it does NOT necessarily mean it will work for a little leaguer. Imagine trying to teach a beginner golfer how to create torque like Tiger Woods, when they’re still unsure of the correct stance and grip. The baseball videos you’ve seen before aren’t necessarily filled with BAD information (although there is a TON of terrible baseball instruction out there), rather they are filled with BAD information for kids.

Who is Dan Spring, and why should I give him my money?

Simply put, we believe Dan is the best baseball coach of 4-12 year olds, period. He’s been coaching that age group specifically in some capacity since 1994 and full-time since 2004. He’s logged over 10,000 hours on the field with Little Leaguers (at a rate of $100-$500 an hour) over the last decade with tremendous results, and while he would never profess to know everything there is to know about baseball, we doubt there’s anyone around who knows more about coaching Little Leaguers than he does. With an EBA subscription, you can access everything he knows for less than cost of 1 hour of private instruction with him.

There are a gazillion free instruction videos on YouTube, why should I pay for EBA?

In all seriousness, we believe you get what you pay for. At YouTube, the credentials of the coaches are unverified, you’ll waste hours looking for a video that may have something of value to you in it, there are no forums or other areas to interact, they don’t have dedicated support, and the list goes on and on.
